Alex Sanders is the distantly second-most important wiccan leader after Gerald Gardner.
Alex Sanders was initiated into Wicca in 1963. Sanders thereafter became very successful in recruiting new wiccans.
By the late 1960s, Sanders had created his own new variant of Wicca, which came to be called Alexandrian Wicca.
Alexandrian Wicca does not depart much from the original Gardnerian Wicca, at least not when compared to later variants of Wicca which depart much further from Wicca's original form. Therefore Gardnerian Wicca, Alexandrian Wicca, and a related sect called Algard Wicca, are together called 'traditional Wicca' or 'british traditional Wicca', to distinguish them from the more deviant variants of Wicca, and especially Neo-Wicca.
